Setting up a VPN on Android is very simple, and it only takes a few minutes.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an essential tool to keep your internet activity private and secure. It can help you browse the web privately, mask your actual location while browsing the web for added privacy, unblock certain geo-restricted websites and content, and more. There’s no shortage of VPN providers out there, so there are plenty of options across different platforms. Most of the best VPNs out there charge you a monthly or an annual fee, but you can pick from our selection of the best free VPNs to get started. Almost all these VPNs have an app that you can use on your Android phone, and here’s how to set it up.
How to use a VPN on Android
Setting up and using a VPN on Android is fairly simple, and can be done through a few simple steps. You only have to set up the application and grant it network access once, and you can use it just like any other application after that. We’ll use Turbo VPN for this particular tutorial, but you can pretty much any VPN app of your choice.
- Download and install Turbo VPN from the Google Play Store.
- Launch the app, and tap Agree and continue.
- Tap the Connect button, and then select Allow on the pop-up screen to enable VPN.
You’ll now be connected to VPN, and you’ll see a VPN icon on the status bar to indicate your connection.

You can also verify your active VPN connection by heading to your phone’s network settings and selecting VPN. You may find it under a different menu option under settings, but in case of a OnePlus phone, you’ll have to go to Settings > Connection & sharing > VPN. Simply select the ‘i’ button next to your active VPN to expand more options to enable Always-On or Remove VPN.
Closing thoughts
And that’s how easy it is to use a VPN on Android. If you’re not satisfied with a VPN app or client, you can try multiple apps before settling on the one you prefer. ProtonVPN is a good free app to start with, and so is Turbo VPN that we used in this tutorial. Different VPN apps allow you to access different locations, so you can try a few apps if the location you’re looking for isn’t available on the one you’re currently using. Note that free VPNs only allow you to connect to select locations, so you may have to pay a premium to access more locations.
