Googles Pay App will Soon Shut Down in Favor of Google Wallet

Regardless of what you think about Google’s somewhat erratic support for some of its software services, the fact remains that the company can and will do anything it deems necessary to ensure the growth of its more successful apps and products. With that in mind, Google recently announced that the “Google Pay” app will be shut down later this year, to be fully replaced by the Google Wallet app.

Google Pay will no longer be available to use starting on June 4, 2024, as part of a “simplifying experience” as Google puts it. Up until the scheduled shut down date, users can continue to access the U.S. version of the Google Pay app to view and transfer their Google Pay balance to their bank accounts. For Pay app users in India and Singapore, the company specifies that “nothing will change.” As per the official announcement:

“Google Wallet continues to be the primary place for people to securely store payment cards used for tap and pay in stores, alongside other digital items like transit cards, driver’s licenses, state IDs and more. To simplify the app experience, the U.S. version of the standalone Google Pay app will no longer be available for use starting June 4, 2024. You can continue to access the most popular features — tapping to pay in stores and managing payment methods — right from Google Wallet, which is used five times more than the Google Pay app in the U.S.”

With all that being said, it’s safe to say that Google Wallet users will soon have a less confusing app setup once Pay goes the way of the Dodo.
