Next Pixel mid-ranger uses Tensor G4 with older Samsung modem

Last month, Google launched the Pixel 9 series. All four smartphones in it — Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold — use the Tensor G4 SoC, which has Samsung’s latest modem for smartphones, the Exynos Modem 5400.

The next smartphone in the lineup, the Pixel 9a, which will be a more affordable, mid-range device, is also going to feature the Tensor G4 chipset. That comes as great news for people waiting for the device. However, a new leak suggests that the chipset will have some downgrades in the modem department.

According to Android Authority, the Tensor G4 in the Pixel 9a will have Samsung's Exynos Modem 5300 from last year. The older modem is less power-efficient than the newer one, which means that it Pixel 9a might offer a shorter battery backup than the Pixel 9 even if it has a battery of the same size.

The latest news will surely be disappointing for Pixel fans. That being said, Google will have to cut corners somewhere to launch the Pixel 9a at a lower price. This is one of them. We hope that the chipset does not have any other downgrades.
