One of the reasons you might choose to use Telegram over other messenger apps is because of the company’s approach to privacy. There have been criticisms levied against them in the past, but for the most part, the company’s privacy ensured that users could use the app without being ousted to local authorities.
That is expected to change where according to Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, the app will now comply with legal requests by authorities. If this happens, Telegram will provide authorities with the IP address and phone numbers. We wouldn’t be surprised if this could result in many users leaving the platform in favor of something else.
In addition to accepting requests by the authorities, Telegram is expected to also introduce AI monitoring tools to monitor illegal content. Obviously some are in praise of this change as it would help prevent criminals from hiding behind privacy walls, but for regular users who just value their privacy in general, this could be huge, and not in a good way.
