Meet Kara Pod: The Self-Refilling Coffee Maker That Pulls Water from Thin Air

Kara Water is back with a new countertop appliance that aims to replace both your water cooler and your coffee maker. Dubbed the Kara Pod, the device pulls triple duty: it generates drinking water from ambient air, adds essential minerals, and brews coffee, all without plumbing, refills, or single-use plastic. The Kickstarter campaign for Kara Pod is live now through July 2, with deliveries projected to begin in September 2025.

Water from Air, Coffee on Demand

Positioned as the “world’s first self-refilling coffee machine,” Kara Pod builds on the company’s earlier Kara Pure system with a more compact, dual-purpose design. Its core feature is Kara’s patented AirDriveF” technology, which mimics the Namib Desert beetle to extract 3.2 liters of vapor from the air daily using a zeolite desiccant system. The collected water is sterilized through distillation, then filtered and UV-treated before being mineralized with calcium, magnesium, and sodium.

From there, users can dispense either clean drinking water or make a cup of coffee using Nespresso Original Line-compatible pods or Kara’s own. Two separate nozzles keep the flavors from crossing paths, no surprise coffee in your water bottle.

    No Plumbing Required

Kara Pod plugs into a standard outlet and doesn’t require any external hookups, making it well-suited for apartments, offices, or spaces where plumbing access is limited. A built-in touchscreen offers control over water and coffee options, and Wi-Fi support allows for firmware updates post-purchase.

The unit weighs just 13 pounds and measures 15 x 9 x 14 inches, designed to fit comfortably on a countertop. With a power draw of 270W and support for both 110V and 220V outlets, it’s also travel- and region-friendly, though the company notes it will not ship to Russia, Israel, Ukraine, Brazil, Guam, or the US Virgin Islands.

    Addressing Health, Convenience, and Cost

According to Kara Water, the average person spends more than $1,700 per year on bottled water and coffee. Kara Pod targets both environmental and economic concerns by eliminating plastic waste and recurring purchases, while offering water that’s been distilled, filtered, UV-treated, and mineral-enriched, all from the air.

The system is aimed at those who are skeptical of municipal water quality and want a self-reliant hydration alternative. With rising concerns around lead, PFAS, and microplastics in drinking water, Kara Pod delivers a fresh take, literally, on home beverage solutions.

    Availability and Campaign Details

The Kara Pod is available now for pre-order through Kickstarter, with special backer pricing and perks available through the end of the campaign on July 2. Shipping is expected to begin in September 2025. More details are available at karawater.com.
