Google Drive for Android could soon support automatic PDF summaries

Google Drive might be getting smarter on Android. After rolling out PDF summarization on the web, Google is now preparing to bring the same feature to mobile. A recent APK teardown shows that the Android app is almost ready to offer automatic summaries of PDF files using Gemini AI.

This change was first spotted by Android Authority in version 2.25.250 of the app, but the latest version, 2.25.280, reveals even more progress. Once launched, users will start seeing a “Summary by Gemini” section at the top of PDF files in Drive. This means less scrolling, less searching, and a quicker way to understand what’s inside a document.

Previously, users had to tap a “Summarize this file” button to activate the feature. But in future versions, Drive may show the summary automatically without any extra steps. It’s a small but useful change, especially for people who deal with long or complex PDFs on the go.

Gemini won’t just summarize, either. There will be an “Ask Gemini” button underneath the summary, letting users ask questions about the file directly. Responses will appear in the familiar Gemini bottom sheet, making it easy to interact without leaving the document. You’ll also be able to rate Gemini’s answers with a thumbs up or down to give feedback.

Google is also working on multi-file and folder-level summarization. That could allow Drive to pull insights from multiple PDFs at once. This is a big time-saver for students, researchers, or anyone dealing with large document sets.

The feature hasn’t gone live yet, but all signs point to a near-future release. When it drops, Drive on Android will become a lot more than just a file viewer.
