Smartwatch batteries don’t get much attention until they start to age. With the Galaxy Watch 8, Samsung is finally doing something about it. A new “Battery Protection” feature quietly rolled out with the latest model, and it could go a long way toward preserving battery health over time.
Here’s how it works: when enabled, the Galaxy Watch 8 battery stops charging at 90%. It waits until the charge naturally drops to 85%, then tops it back up to 90%. The result is a steady charge cycle that avoids keeping the battery pinned at 100% for long periods. That kind of overcharging is known to wear out lithium-ion batteries faster.
Plenty of smartphones already offer similar battery protection features, often capping the charge at 80%. Samsung’s decision to land at 90% for the Galaxy Watch 8 battery seems intentional. Since smartwatches have smaller batteries to begin with, cutting things off at 80% might not get users through a full day. The 90% cap offers a middle ground, slowing battery aging without sacrificing daily usability.
For now, this feature is exclusive to the Galaxy Watch 8. But with One UI 8 Watch around the corner, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it expand to older models. And frankly, it should. It’s a smart fix to a problem that’s been ignored for too long.
