Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series is known for pushing smartphone design forward, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 continues that tradition with a thinner, more refined build. While it doesn’t reinvent the foldable, early impressions suggest real improvements to durability and polish. But one detail is drawing concern: the hinge.
Reports from early users and display unit sightings suggest that some Galaxy Z Fold 7 units might not be unfolding fully flat. A Reddit user even shared an image showing a visible angle when the phone is opened, instead of lying perfectly flush. A few users also noted a small gap when the phone is folded shut and signs of wear on demo units in high-traffic stores.

For a foldable this expensive, the hinge is critical. It affects everything from the feel to the screen’s long-term health. While a few isolated issues are normal at launch, especially with foldables, the concern is whether this is the start of a wider pattern.
So far, it doesn’t seem to be. Several other reports, including hands-on impressions from Android Central, say the units they tested unfolded completely flat without any issues. The unit we tried didn’t show the problem either.
It’s still early days, so this might just be a few defective units in the wild. But if more reports surface, Samsung might need to take a closer look. We’ll be watching.
