Meta’s announcement of Instagram’s new “Map” feature proved to be a pretty polarizing point of discussion online, especially with regards to user privacy. That being said, while it does add a bit of convenience when using Instagram, it is thankfully optional, and users can of course choose to keep their location info private.

To get started with the Map function, users will need to open their direct messages (DMs) and tap the Map icon at the top. The app will then guide you through how the feature works and will require you to enable Location Services on your phone. Once you’re on the map, you can view your friends’ locations (if they’ve chosen to share them), see posts tagged with specific locations, search for friends’ locations, and tap friends’ icons to view their profile.

That being said, sharing your live location on Instagram Map is turned off by default, although any posts you create with a tagged location will still appear on the map unless you change your settings. Users have four options for sharing their location:
To adjust location-sharing settings on Instagram, users can also change their preferred sharing option by simply selecting No one, which hides their location info. In order to hide specific locations, you can also open the map and go to Location Settings > Hide Places. A pin will then appear on the map, which you can drag to the location you want to hide. Users can also adjust the size of the hidden area using the slider, then give the location a name and tap Done.
