India has become one of Samsung's biggest manufacturing bases after Vietnam, which is where Samsung phones are made for the most part, in addition to a wide variety of other products.
The manufacturing facilities in India are used to produce mobile devices for the domestic and export markets, and the company has reportedly expanded its assembly footprint there with the production of laptops in the country.
Plans for laptop production have been in motion for a while
Local media is reporting that Samsung has begun the production of laptops at its Greater Noida plant in India. This factory is already used to produce other devices including smartphones, wearables, and tablets.
This factory has been a long-term investment for Samsung in the country, seeing as how it was first set up back in 1996. It has now become Samsung's second largest global manufacturing base for smartphones and other mobile devices.
Plans were already set in motion for laptop production at this facility. Samsung's TM Roh had said earlier this year that the preparation for laptop assembly in India had begun and that it would kick off soon.
This move would go a long way in helping Samsung expands its footprint in the local laptop market. While Samsung enjoys a dominant share in the local mobile market, it's only the second largest player with a 15% share of the laptop market.
Local production should help make its products more competitive on price and thus help increase the company's market share.
