Samsung takes critical step towards supremacy in QLED and QD-OLED TVs

Samsung has been the number one television brand globally for the last nineteen years consecutively. The credit for the South Korean tech giant being the largest TV manufacturer in the last few years arguably goes partly to its quantum dot (QD) technology, which it has used with LCD and OLED TVs and was an instant hit in the market. Well, it looks like the company is planning to strength its QD game even further.

According to The Elec, Samsung Electronics has acquired 53 patents related to the quantum dot (QD) technology for televisions from Merck Patent in the United States of America. Reportedly, Samsung will use these technologies for LCD, OLED, as well as Micro LED TVs in the future in an attempt to compete even more strongly with the Chinese brands, which have been giving Samsung a tough fight in the LCD TV space lately.

Some of the patents that Samsung has acquired are related to cadmium-free quantum dot technology. In the initial days of the QD tech, the quantum dot sheet was made primarily with cadmium. While Samsung stopped using cadmium for QD sheets long ago for environmental benefits, some Chinese brands are still using it.

A few months ago, we learned that Samsung is developing a new QD sheet that is 40% cheaper to manufacture. It could significantly reduce the price of the brand’s QLED and QD-OLED TVs. Maybe the newly acquired patents have something to do with that. Speaking of TVs, Samsung recently launched the world's first 115-inch Micro RGB TV.
