You Can Now Send DMs in… Spotify?

In what could be described as one of the more surprising app updates this year, Spotify recently confirmed that it’s rolling out a new new in-app messaging feature that will let users share music, podcasts, and audiobooks with friends and family. Aptly dubbed the “Messages” feature, Spotify says that the new in-app function is launching this week for both Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets.

According to Spotify, the new feature was developed in response to user requests for a dedicated space to instantly share content and track recommendations. As with a lot of mainstream messaging apps, the Spotify Messages feature enables one-on-one conversations where users can send content, text, and emojis. Spotify adds that the new tool is also aimed at artists and creators by making it easier for them to share their work and grow their audience.

Users can initiate a chat by tapping the share icon in the Now Playing view and selecting a friend from their app’s contact list. The feature will suggest contacts based on prior interactions, such as sharing content, participating in Jams or Blends, or being part of the same Family or Duo plan. The Messages inbox can be accessed through the user’s profile photo in the top-left corner of the app.
