Samsung was the first brand to launch 200MP camera sensors for mobile devices, and to this day, it remains the only brand to have done so. However, rumours have circulated that Sony has been working on a similar sensor, and details about it have now leaked.
Sony's first 200MP camera sensor is coming soon to rival Samsung
Today, prolific tipster from China, Digital Chat Station (DCS), has revealed that Sony's first 200MP mobile camera sensor is the IMX09E. It is reportedly positioned above the Lytia LYT-900, which is a 1-inch 50MP camera sensor. The IMX90E is said to have a 1/1.12-inch size (optical format terms), resulting in an individual pixel size of 0.7µm. The sensor is said to be built on a 22nm process node.

Sony's first 200MP camera sensor reportedly supports Hybrid Frame HDR, an ultra-high dynamic range of 100dB+, and greatly improved photosensitivity. It is also said to support 2x and 4x in-sensor zoom for near optical (lossless zoom) quality shots. It will be used in upcoming flagship phones like the OPPO Find X9 Ultra and the Vivo X300 Ultra. Some rumours had claimed that it will also make its way to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, but that turned out to be false.
In comparison, Samsung's best 200MP camera sensor is the ISOCELL HP2 that debuted with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It is a 1/1.4-inch sensor with 0.6µm pixels. It uses Smart-ISO Pro (iDCG) and Dual Slope Gain (DSG) for improved photosensitivity and a wider dynamic range. However, Samsung doesn't offer details about the dynamic range in dB terms. Even the Galaxy S26 Ultra reportedly uses this camera sensor.

If the information in the new report is accurate, Sony's 200MP camera sensor should theoretically offer it an advantage over Samsung's due to its larger size. However, only time will tell if this is indeed the case. To compete, Samsung should develop similarly large or even 1-inch 200MP camera sensors.
