]Waze (beta) (Freeware)
Requirements: PPC WM5, WM6 - GPS
Overview: Waze is a social mobile application providing free turn-by-turn navigation, maps and traffic information based on the wisdom of the crowd. 100% powered by users, the more you drive, the better it gets.
http://i36.tinypic.com/23wwwhl.jpg
[break]
Waze is a free, 100% user-generated, social navigation app that allows drivers to build
and use live maps & real-time traffic updates to improve their daily commute.
In addition to providing turn-by-turn navigation, waze also gives drivers the ability to
actively update each other on traffic, police traps, construction, speedcams and more,
reflecting a live description of the road at any given moment – and because it’s
user-generated, the more people who use it, the better (and more fun) it gets!

KEY FEATURES
* Voice guided Turn-by turn navigation
* Google Local search
* Constantly-updated road map
* Real-time traffic updates
* Automatic rerouting
* Live reports from users on the road
* Turn-by turn directions
* Road tweets - Twitter integration
* Picture sharing from the road

Here’s what users are saying about us:
* Coolest navigation app I’ve seen in a while, hope more people sign up in my area!” – L8ner
* Love this thing. I’m addicted to pacman road muching. Road01runner
* It really learns. The routes I get better routes every day. Josenovo01
* Routing could be improved, but there’s tons of potential with this app. – Mindigo

What they’re saying in the press:
CNET: "Waze is different from almost every other navigation product I've seen, but
I hope it succeeds, if only because I like the idea of a route navigation system that gets
better as more people use it.”
CNN.com: "You've gotta love it anytime masses of people come together to make
something cool. That seems to be what's happening with Waze."

my original thought was, user driven, there arent many people with windows mobile that would update this shit...then i saw that its available on iphone, android, wm and symbian....this is gonna be big :)

Re: Waze (beta) (Freeware)

I am liking the concept and unifying all drivers that use it. As stated previously, the more people that were on this, the better and more fun this would be.

Haha, I thought it was pretty neat w/the PacMan aspect, but I haven't logged in since yesterday to see about naming the road and all. So far, all seems to be working well. I am sure we'll continue to add more input as this goes along.

I'm like 2300 I think. The problem with me is I don't have to drive long distances to get to work anymore. I'm like 5 minutes up the road compared to when I used to travel 45 minutes to an hour back in the day. I'm happy I'm that low, haha. It works great. Someone was using it ahead of me a week or two ago and when I got to a certain area, it showed a yellow streak on the road (in Waze) that represented the speeds they were dealing with, which was 39 mph, so it gave me an idea that traffic was starting to back up. I'm lovin' this. We just need more people to partake and get this community to grow, because the more people the more communication, the more benefit we will reap :D

+1 forty01.

i only drive about 10 minutes to work, but we have quite a few "remote sites" i get to go to thruout the week. i've been doing it about 2-3 weeks & clocked over 500 miles "wazing"

its fun contributing to the effort & community. i've noticed its best to have a car charger when ur doing this as it will DRAIN! your battery in no time with GPS + ev-do running full blast =]

Absolutely, I have my charger intertwined with my audio plug, so I always plug mine in and if I want sound it's there and it's always charged, especially if I'm streaming WunderRadio and listening to Hot 97 in NY or some other station and Wazing ;D lol

Ahh.. the rankings. I drive for UPS. Not only that, but I'm a "swing driver," meaning I'm in a new area almost every day. If I do like the app, any takers on how long it takes me to be ranked near the top? LOL....

Installing now... Thanks guys!

For sure. I think you can make good use out of it and give needed feedback to the community.

this is a neat app i kinda like it, i always check to see of any traffic in the route I'm traveling..and its actual time...

Re: Waze (beta) (Freeware)

What's great about Waze is you can see the community growing, which is needed for this to be successful. I remember when it was 1st released and I would look at the live maps. You hardly saw any activity, but when I look at it now you can see more activity and reports. I can see other Waze users that are near me, when that would not have been the case previously. It's actually pretty exciting that it's progressing so well.

Re Waze (beta (Freeware

Update & tiny review...

On my first day of using it, I was just shy of 1300 points. I only used it for 1/2 the day. It only seems to add points when you're on a road you've never been on, before. I'm currently sitting on about 4000 points. I'd have more, but it sucks the battery dry in no time flat. So, I'll run it for a while when I start my route & then turn it off unless I see something that needs to be reported. Our trucks (at UPS) don't have power outlets, so I'm on battery when I'm using it. :-(

If you must use this w/o having it plugged into a charger, make sure you have the backlight turned off. Even with it off, the battery on my TP was down to 30% from a full charge in about 2 hours.

As a navigator, Waze sucks. LOL. The scrolling is pathetically slow, maps are the most incomplete of any I've used (and I've used almost every nav software available.) But, here just East of Atlanta, the community seems to be fairly vibrant. I was alerted to the Georgia State Patrol pulling over commercial vehicles (very important to a UPS driver,) two traffic jams, and one wreck. This was all within the last 3 days alone!

I've logged a few reports, myself. Making basic reports is as simple as touching 3 buttons on the screen. However, the last button requires you to scroll... I think they could and should fix that. If you want to clarify a report when you stop your vehicle, you can. Nice.

I was a little concerned it might interfere with calls, but it doesn't. However, every time I received a call, I had to restart Waze as it gave an error saying it'd lost connection to the network. I found that bizarre, because I always still had maps being loaded. Maybe this is a glitch. The only thing it interferes with is your auto-power off settings. You can still MANUALLY turn your phone off, but the automatic power settings are over ridden.

All in all, I HIGHLY recommend this software.

Most all of us have GPS software on our phones & most of us actually do not NEED GPS for 99% of the driving we do. We turn our GPS on to show off to our friends or just enjoy watching the world go by on our little screens. Using Waze, we can still show off, fiddle with our phones AND help out the rest of the smartphone community!!!

Brilliant!!!

Re: Waze (beta) (Freeware)

hey guys no matter where i am at when i start this program even when it does have gps signal i cant get it to pick up the roads... all i have is a blank screen with all the options on the top task bar and than the ones on the left side of the screen like usual.... shit i havent ran google maps in the background but is that needed to get the maps to show at all? im prolly just being a dumbass haha

roopull 11-07-2009 08:38 PM

Re: Waze (beta) (Freeware)

D/\SH, if you're a dumbass, I don't ever want to learn what I am! LOL

When I load it up, I have maps. I'm running the most up-to-date stock Sprint ROM on a Touch Pro. Have you tried zooming way out or driving on major roads/interstates? I have never run Google Maps in the background.

I have found that in some areas, many of the roads simply aren't in their database. On the flipside, I've found some apartment complex driveways ARE in their database. Strange. Like I said earlier, of all the GPS apps I've used, the Waze maps are the most incomplete.

You DO have the option of recording roads as you drive them for some audacious points... of course, that'd be a lot of work.

Maybe attempt re-loading it?

Good luck, man!

Re: Waze (beta) (Freeware)

thanks and finally got it, it was the rom that i was using that wasnt allowing it to work and show up hahaha so in a way im a dumbass for not thinking about that till now but owell at least i got it working... thanks for the reply.

Re: Waze (beta) (Freeware)

this is pretty cool, one quick question guys, if the roads are visible on the map do you have to mark as finding new roads or just drive to get the acknowledgment of the street and such without that activated.... just wanna make sure im doing right.... starting to get points now hahaha

roopull 11-08-2009 12:31 PM

Re: Waze (beta) (Freeware)

Don't have to do anything unless the roads aren't marked. Roads with the dots are roads you get points for... other roads are just "there." From time to time, I've found roads I've already traveled get the dots for points again, but I honestly don't know the methodology for determining which roads give you points.

drdrewdown 11-11-2009 12:42 PM

Re: Waze (beta) (Freeware)

using the latest cellular south radio i had an issue where the GPS would need "primed" before waze would pick it up. the newest vzw radio works great & gps locks within about 5 seconds.

D^SH dont forget you can go to
Code:

www.waze.com
& login & you will find you can add new roads & some other neat stuff from the interactive maps/dashboards. GL

I haven't been using it everyday, but am up to over 8000 points & am ranked just above 2000.

Bizarre, D/\SH. The only time I have similar problems is when I'm driving pretty fast. I outrun their server, I think. Are you in a 3G area? That could be the issue... slow data. Around here, it's almost all Rev A.

i know that but the map will be there and than disappear... the roads were showing than when my car gets to where the top of the screen was it is gone..... the whole map is gone.... and my vehicle does move i dont have a map to move across though cause it dissapears about 20 seconds after starting to drive in any area.... im giving up on this app and calling it a failure in my books.

For those of you who have it working well, you can make custom icons. They're just .png files. I made one that's a cartoony overhead of my van.

D/\SH, I'm thinking it's probably the ROM you're running. Wasn't that the issue, earlier?

I'm on a boring ole' stock Sprint ROM, myself.
