ARTICLE: Palm Pixi to launch 11-15 for $100 (Sprint)

Today, official word came in that Palm Pixi will be available on November 15, as an exclusive offering from — you guessed it — Sprint. The cost will be $99.99, after a $50 instant discount and a $100 mail-in rebate (making the check-out price $199.99). Touchstone covers will also be offered for just $19.

Pre’s little sister will sport WebOS, just like its predecessor, but in a smaller package. Pixi hasn’t been positioned as a smartphone or productivity tool, like a lot of other handsets on the market, so I suppose it’s unfair to compare it as such. It’s been considered more of a super-thin, pocketable mass consumer “lifestyle” device. Given that, the $199.99 upfront price seems kind of high to me — especially considering it lacks Wifi. Add in the fact that it’s a little slower (thanks to a downgraded processor) and has a smaller display, and this could be wind up being a tough sell — even for people who adore the tiny form factor.

So this may not have current Pre users flocking to trade up (or is it down?). But we’ll have to wait and see whether it appeals to customers new to WebOS. PD has asked for a sample unit, so if you’re curious, check back soon for our impressions of it.
