YouTube TV finally starts testing 5.1 audio for Google TV, Android TV, Roku

Sound contributes a lot to how we enjoy our media. Being able to hear the instruments clearly in a song, or hearing character voices come through crisp, or the rumble of a car’s engine, all of those can affect how much we enjoy a song or show. The problem with YouTube TV is that for the longest time ever, support for 5.1 audio was only limited to select TVs from Samsung, LG, and Vizio, but the good news is that if you’re using a different brand or a different model that doesn’t support it, as long as your TV is running Google TV or Android TV or you have a Roku set-top box, you can look forward to 5.1 audio coming soon.
We know 5.1 audio is important to many of you, so we wanted to share an update. We’re currently testing 5.1 audio on Google TV, Android TV, and Roku, and if everything runs smoothly, we can expect 5.1 audio to launch on those devices next.

According to a recent tweet, YouTube has announced that they have finally started to test out 5.1 audio support for the platforms we mentioned above. While there is no mention of when it will be officially released, the company states that if everything goes smoothly, they will eventually roll it out.

YouTube did promise that they would bring 5.1 audio to those platforms last year, so it has been a while since it was last announced, but we suppose better late than never. Hopefully the fact that they are testing it now suggests that availability won’t be too far behind.
