5 Great Strategy Games for Android

One of the best things about the Google Play Store is that its library covers just about every genre of gaming known to man – you’ve got role-playing games, hack-and-slash titles, first-person shooters, and we’ve even seen games ported over from consoles to mobile. In particular, strategy games are a great fit for gaming on the go, due to an easy control set-up, and low graphics requirements (most of the time, at least). It’s no secret that it can be a struggle to find some worthwhile hidden gems under the piles of gacha titles and free-to-play affairs – but that’s what we’re here for.Today, we’ve rounded up some great-quality games for players looking to try out some serious strategy on their Android phones. Let’s take a look!

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions

Heralded by many as one of the best strategy gaming masterpieces ever made by Square Enix, Final Fantasy Tactics originally launched on the first PlayStation, around the same time when Final Fantasy VII was ushering in a new era of JRPG gaming. The game featured a lengthy campaign with a nicely-written storyline, as well as an in-depth job class system and character customization. The game has since spawned a few sequels and remasters, and for a few years now has made the Play Store its home.

War of the Lions features some graphics and performance improvements from the original title, and the controls have been optimized to work with a touchscreen. For those not familiar with it, the version on Android is basically the PSP port, albeit with some optimizations for mobile.

Check out the game here.

XCOM 2 Collection

When 2K first ported XCOM: Enemy Within for mobile platforms, it showed that gaming on smartphones had more potential beyond your usual array of casual cash-grab titles. With the release of XCOM 2 Collection on the Play Store, players were now able to experience one of the best-reviewed strategy games on consoles, all in the palm of their hand.

XCOM 2 serves as a direct sequel to the previous game, and will put players up against elite alien squads for some tactical turn-based action. It also includes four DLC packs for players to enjoy. One thing to keep in mind though is that the game does feature high-end graphics, and mid-range devices might have a bit of trouble running the game. if you still want to try it though or have a device that’s perfectly capable of running it, then feel free to click on the link below.

Disgaea 1 Complete

Not to be confused with the other Disgaea game on Google Play, Disgaea 1 Complete is a port of the original PlayStation 2 title. The game has since been ported over to a ton of other systems like the PSP, Nintendo DS, and PS4 to name a few, and it only seemed logical that it would eventually find its way into the Play Store. It’s a bit similar to Final Fantasy Tactics because of the JRPG elements and Japanese character design, but it manages to put its own spin on the turn-based strategy genre.

Disgaea 1 Complete is optimized for touch controls, and the game also lets you export save files, albeit through a lengthy backup process.

Company of Heroes

If you’re in the mood for some real-time strategy this time around, then Company of Heroes might suit you more. Originally launched for PCs, Company of Heroes places you in WWII, and gives you command over infantry units, vehicles, and will test your mettle on the mobile battlefield. The game has been reworked to be playable on touchscreens, although the UI can feel a bit awkward to handle at times.

Nevertheless, this mobile port brings over all the tactical goodness from the original game, along with some improvements. If you must know, the port was handled by Feral Interactive, who did a wonderful job bringing over GRID Autosport and XCOM 2 to mobile devices.

Great Little Wargame

One of the OG Android games, Great Little Wargame has been around on the Google Play Store for a while now. And while it has spawned a number of sequels, the original title still has its own charm to it, and if you’re after a straightforward turn-based strategy game, then this might be a great game for you. The gameplay is a bit similar to titles like “Advance Wars,” complete with chibi infantry, base-capturing, vehicle-building, and more. It’s also lightweight in terms of file size and graphics, and will definitely be a fun strategy title for a lot of gamers out there.
