Future Android smartphones could support multiple eSIMs
Most of us have one main phone number. Some of us might have two – one for work, one for personal, but there are some who might have even more for whatever reason. Typically phones these days come with support for dual SIM, but that has a physical limitation as building more SIM card slots would end up taking up space within a handset.Thankfully, it appears that Google could be laying the groundwork for Android to support multiple eSIMs in the future, according to a report from Esper. Now, just because eSIMs aren’t physical doesn’t mean that you can have an unlimited number of them. This is why it is very rare to see phones that actually support dual eSIMs. According to the report, it seems that in Android 13 lies an implementation of a Google patent filed back in 2020 that allows multiple SIM profiles to be used in a single embedded chip. You could think of this like a CPU, where the chipset itself is physical but has been split into multiple cores for better efficiency and performance. What this means is that in the future, future builds of Android could support more than one eSIM. It would also allow handset manufacturers to do away with the SIM card slot for good and use that additional space for other components, like bigger and better cameras or higher-capacity batteries. Nothing official has been announced yet and while it was spotted in Android 13, it might not necessarily make the final cut, but maybe we’ll hear a bit more about it at Google I/O in the coming months.
