Samsung passing on under-display camera for the Galaxy S23



One of the features that we’ve yet to see become more common and mainstream are under-display cameras. There are devices like the recently-announced ZTE Axon 40 Ultra that utilize the technology, but for the most part, we’re still seeing a lot of phones utilize the notch or the hole-punch cutout.If you were hoping 2023 would be different, it won’t be in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S23. This is according to a report from Korean website Naver, in which they claim that for the Galaxy S23, Samsung will not be using an under-display camera for the phone.



In a way, it shouldn’t be surprising. This is because there are still a lot of hurdles to clear when it comes to under-display cameras, and the samples we’ve seen so far are kind of lacking. Given that photography is one of the strong suits of Samsung’s flagship series, we’re sure that the company isn’t comfortable with the idea of releasing cameras that are subpar and end up looking worse than its predecessors.

Also, Samsung isn’t alone in their decision either. Apple themselves are still not sold on the under-display camera yet. In fact, the rumors are claiming that for the iPhone 15, Apple will adopt a hole-punch, suggesting that the company isn’t quite ready for the seamless look yet either.

We’re not sure when Samsung will adopt the under-display camera design, but if you were hoping it would be next year, then you might be out of luck.
