How to view and share your WhatsApp QR code

Unlike other instant messengers that rely on usernames, WhatsApp relies on phone numbers. This means that to add a WhatsApp contact, you’ll need to know their phone number, or you’d have to give your phone number. This isn’t really an issue, but if you’re running a business and you have people who need to constantly contact you, then this can be quite troublesome. This is why QR codes might be easier, where users can just scan the QR code to start chatting with you. So the question is, how do you create a QR code for your WhatsApp, and how do you share it?

Finding your WhatsApp QR code

WhatsApp actually creates QR codes for you already. This means that you won’t have to use a third-party QR code generator, which is pretty handy.

  1. Launch WhatsApp
  2. On Android, tap on “More Options” and go to Settings. For iOS users, open WhatsApp and tap the “Settings” tab at the bottom
  3. Tap the small QR code icon next to your name
  4. Your QR code will now show up
Sharing your WhatsApp QR code

At this point you have a couple of options. You can either take a screenshot or save the QR code to your phone. If you prefer the latter:

  1. On the page your QR code is displayed, tap the Share icon
  2. Select the contact you want to share the QR code with or you can choose to save it to your phone for later use
Scanning a WhatsApp QR code

If you’ve come across a WhatsApp QR code, like if someone sent it to you or if it’s been printed out or listed on a website, here’s how you can scan it to start chatting with that person or business:

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. On Android, tap on “More Options” and go to Settings. For iOS users, open WhatsApp and tap the “Settings” tab at the bottom
  3. Tap the small QR code icon next to your name
  4. Tap Scan/Scan Code
  5. Point your phone’s camera at the QR code
  6. Tap Add and you’re done
