More details emerge about Netflix?s ad-supported tier

So we know that Netflix is planning to introduce an ad-supported tier next year that will be cheaper than its current offerings. In addition to ads, there will be some compromises to the platform’s features, such as its inability to download videos for offline viewing. Now thanks to additional reports, we’re getting more details about what we might be able to expect from it. For starters, a report from IT Home has suggested that one of the compromises of the ad-supported tier is that the max resolution that users will be able to stream on will be capped at 480p.

This means that instead of being able to stream at higher 1080p or 4K resolutions as offered in some of Netflix’s current plans, users will have to make do with a lower quality stream. In some instances this might be bad, like for users who might have a larger television set and 480p becomes a lot more obvious.

But it’s not all bad news. A report from Bloomberg has indicated that despite it being an ad-supported tier, not all of Netflix’s shows will have ads, namely shows that cater towards children, as well as original movies. This means that there might be instances where you can enjoy the content at a cheaper price without ads.

At this point in time it is unclear how much this new Netflix tier is expected to cost, but hopefully it will be cheap enough where it will make some of these compromises a little easier to swallow. The company will be launching it in 2023 so we should have more details then.
