Samsung may ditch Snapdragon for MediaTek on its next flagship smartphone



Samsung’s Galaxy S flagship phones are its top-of-the-line devices, offering fast and reliable performance compared to the rest of the company’s smartphone line-up. As such, the company outfits its premium phones with its own Exynos processors, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets, with the difference being determined by whichever region the devices are being sold, i.e. US buyers get Snapdragon, while EU users get Exynos. However, new leaks are saying that the company might go with a MediaTek chipset for its next flagship smartphone.

A Korean-based website reports that Samsung is considering using MediaTek SoCs for its upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 FE (fan edition) and Galaxy S23. The report states that the company is expected to use MediaTek chipsets for half of the Galaxy S22 FE phones and Galaxy S23 phones which will be sold in Asia. Currently, Samsung uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the Exynos 2200 chipsets for its premium devices.

If true, this should be an interesting move on Samsung’s behalf, considering the reception that Exynos-powered Samsung phones have gotten, especially when compared to their Snapdragon counterparts. There has been some debate on social media on whether or not the Snapdragon variants out-perform their Exynos brethren in terms of performance and battery efficiency.

Samsung occasionally uses MediaTek chipsets for some of its phones, although these mostly fall under its mid-range and budget segments, namely the Samsung Galaxy “A” series. Currently, MediaTek’s most powerful chipsets include the Dimensity 8100 and 9000, which are seen on some high-end phones. The company also sells the Helio line of processors, which are mostly used in mid-range Android phones.

Samsung’s current flagship series includes the Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra, which both come in Exynos and Snapdragon variants. There’s no official word yet from either Samsung or MediaTek, so fans of the South-Korean tech giant will have to do a bit of waiting for this one.
