Netflix confirms a cheaper, ad-supported tier will be coming

One of the appeals of Spotify compared to other music streaming services is that if you don’t want to pay for it, you can always listen to the ad-supported tier for free. It looks like Netflix will be doing the same to their service as well. This was confirmed by the company’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos who spoke at the Cannes Lions advertising festival on Thursday.Speaking on stage with Sway podcast host Kara Swisher, Sarandos essentially confirmed that they are working on an ad-supported tier, but unlike Spotify, it will not be free, but it will be cheaper than the other tiers that the company currently offers.
“We’ve left a big customer segment off the table, which is people who say: ‘Hey, Netflix is too expensive for me and I don’t mind advertising.’ We adding an ad tier; we’re not adding ads to Netflix as you know it today. We’re adding an ad tier for folks who say, ‘Hey, I want a lower price and I’ll watch ads.’”

We did previously hear about the company’s potential plans to add such a tier to their service, but now it looks like it is official. There was no mention of when this new tier is expected to launch, but it might be something that users can look forward to. Netflix at the moment offers a variety of subscription tiers for users.

The cheapest tier is a mobile-only tier that is only offered in certain markets, but for everyone else, the Basic tier is priced at $9.99 with the most expensive option being the Premium tier priced at $19.99. It is unclear how much cheaper this ad-supported tier could cost, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
