Samsung patents a display capable of multiple refresh rates
Samsung patents a display capable of multiple refresh rates
Right now when it comes to display refresh rates, we’re either looking at a fixed refresh rate where regardless of what’s happening, it stays the same. On the flip side, we also have displays with adaptive refresh rates, meaning that it changes the refresh rate according to the device’s needs. But it seems that Samsung is working on something totally different that feels like a combination of what’s already available. In a patent discovered by GalaxyClub.nl, it appears that Samsung has come up with a display capable of hosting multiple refresh rates at the same time and for different parts of the screen. This means that for some parts of the display, it might show a refresh rate of 60Hz, but for other parts, it might be 120Hz. In theory this could potentially lead to better energy efficiency because instead of the entire display running at 120Hz, only a portion of it will, which means less screen real estate to power, and in turn less battery is consumed. It’s actually kind of a clever idea but unfortunately as this is a patent, it’s hard to say when Samsung could make it a reality. That being said, given that Samsung does make its own display panels and technology, we wouldn’t put it past the company to turn this patent into an actual product, but maybe don’t get your hopes up just yet.
