More users are reporting issues with the Pixel 6a fingerprint?s scanner

Last week, we reported that the Google Pixel 6a seemed to have a serious security problem where a bunch of YouTubers who were doing reviews for the phone discovered the issue. The issue, for those unfamiliar, is where the phone’s fingerprint scanner would unlock the phone regardless of whose fingerprint it was scanning. This is kind of scary because it means that anyone with access to your phone could potentially unlock it. It was unclear how widespread the issue was back then, but now it seems like it’s starting to grow as more user reports have since surfaced complaining of the same issue.

We’re not sure why this is happening, but as 9to5Google points out, Google did change the sensor used in the Pixel 6a. The publication did some tests themselves and found no issues with their units, so while the problem is growing, it might not be affecting everyone. It is also not clear if this is a hardware issue or a software one that can be fixed with a patch.

Google did recently release an update that brings the phone’s security patch to the version released in June, but it is only available in Japan for now and for US customers on Verizon’s network. There is no mention whether or not this update will fix the problem so we’ll have to wait for it to be more widely available to get a better idea.
