Google working on a fix for Chromebook broken cameras issue

One of Google’s main selling points for its Chrome OS and Chromebook devices is the ability to send updates instantly to computers the world over, without much fuss and downloading involved. However, reports have surfaced indicating that some Chromebook users are experiencing trouble with their camera hardware, after installing the latest software updates.

According to an article posted online, there have been several software bugs that were found in Chrome OS Update 97 and other succeeding ones. Several users have pointed out that after updating, the camera software on their laptops developed problems during usage, such as the app opening but failing to take and save a photo.

Fortunately, though, Google has taken notice of the issue and has posted a statement in a Reddit thread revolving around the bug reports. The statement reads Hello Chromebook Community, thank you again for taking time to bring this to our attention and apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing. Our team anticipates that the fix will be available later this week with a software update and is not related to your device. We will share an update on this thread once the fix has rolled out. We appreciate your patience as we work on resolving this. Best, Alisha – On behalf of Chrome OS.”

Among the devices mentioned in the report include the Acer Chromebook 14, HP Chromebook X2 11, Lenovo Duet 5 Chromebook, Lenovo 10e Chromebook, Acer Chromebook Spin 13, and even Google’s very own Pixelbook Go. It’s worth mentioning that the affected devices use ARM-based processors, with the exception of the Acer Chromebook as it comes with an Intel Celeron CPU.

Google has certainly had a bit of trouble with updates in the past couple of months, including problems with its smartphone software updates, which resulted in some hardware and software problems for Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owners. The company has since released bug fixes though, which have brought performance improvements to its devices. Meanwhile, Chromebook users will have to wait for a fix and official follow-ups from the company regarding the issues found in Chrome OS.
