Google starts rolling out better AFib detection update for select Fitbit devices

Earlier this month, Google announced that they would soon be introducing an update to its Fitbit devices where it would make the smartwatches and trackers better at detecting AFib. The good news is that it looks like the rollout has kicked off just yesterday, the 25th of April, and will continue to do so over the next few weeks.Keep in mind that not all Fitbit devices will be eligible for this update. According to Google, the nine Fitbit devices that will be getting this update are:

  • Fitbit Sense
  • Fitbit Luxe
  • Fitbit Versa 3
  • Fitbit Versa 2
  • Fitbit Versa Lite
  • Fitbit Inspire 2
  • Fitbit Charge 5
  • Fitbit Charge 4
  • Fitbit Charge 3
The update should be in the process of being rolled out, but if you don’t see it yet, don’t worry as it should eventually make its way to you. Fitbit devices aren’t the only wearables that can detect AFib. There are other smartwatches like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Apple Watch that are also capable.

For those who are unfamiliar, AFib is when your heart beats too slowly, too fast, or in an irregular pattern when you’re not doing anything. This could eventually lead to blood clots in the heart, heart failure, or even a stroke. With smartwatches getting better at detecting the issue, this can be useful as it allows people to seek out medical attention faster, which in turn could potentially save lives.
