ASUS? new Zenbook and Vivobook laptops have 120Hz OLED displays

ASUS? new Zenbook and Vivobook laptops have 120Hz OLED displays

ASUS has introduced an array of new laptops during its “The Pinnacle of Performance” event, mostly focusing on its Zenbook and Vivobook lines. The new laptops introduced all come with the latest processors from AMD and Intel, as well as OLED displays across the board, many of them featuring a high 120Hz refresh rate. The lineup also comes with upgraded thermal designs to keep things running cool.

ASUS Zenbook Pro 16X OLED

Starting things off, there’s the new ASUA Zenbook Pro 16X OLED, which is unique in more ways than just its display. It does have an OLED panel and compared to the last-gen Zenbook Pro 15, you’re getting a slightly larger and taller screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. That display is an Ultra HD panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and it supports DisplayHDR True Black 500 in addition to covering 100% of DCI-P3.

It also now comes with Intel’s H-series processors with up to a Core i9-12900H with 14 cores (6P + 8E) and it features upgraded graphics up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060. The whole system now has a 140W maximum TDP, which means you’ll get a lot more performance – ASUS promises three times more CPU performance and 50% more GPU performance – though at the expense of more heat output and power consumption. That’s why ASUS has also built a new 3D vapor chamber cooling system in addition to the usual heat pipes to keep things running smoothly.

One thing that’s unique about this laptop is its design, since the keyboard is housed on a hinge that lifts up when you open the laptop. This is reminiscent of some of ASUS’s Zenbook Pro Duo models, which have a secondary display in this section. In this case, it’s the keyboard that’s up there, which frees up space for a touchpad with a digital number pad built-in – and that touchpad is now 84% larger and has haptic feedback and pressure sensors – and it adds a new way to take in air for cooling. On top of that, this allows the speaker setup to emit sound more effectively. It also means you have room for a rotating wheel next to the trackpad, ideal for use in professional creative apps that are part of Adobe Creative Cloud.

The laptop is machined from 6000 series aluminum and it comes in at just under 17mm in thickness, so it’s still fairly portable despite its beefy internals. The ASUS Zenbook 16X OLED also has some RGB lighting on the ASUS logo on the lid, under the keyboard, and the keys themselves. The lighting can also be used to show notifications and warnings for things like low battery.

ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED

Next up is the new Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED, which is – again – a major upgrade over the existing Zenbook Duo 14, and even more so over the original Zenbook Duo. It also comes with Intel’s H-series processors with up to a Core i9-12900H14 cores (6P + 8E), meaning you get up to 3.6 times the performance of the original Zenbook Duo. Additionally, it comes with up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics card, which ASUS says can deliver up to 3.7 times the performance of the previous generation.

The display, of course, has also been upgraded to a new 2.8K OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, something we’re seeing in a lot of ASUS’ laptops announced today. Previous 14-inch Zenbook Duo models only had a Full HD 60Hz display, so this is a massive upgrade. Another big upgrade is the new 16:10 aspect ratio, which is ideal for productivity, especially in creative apps. Additionally, it now gets up to 500 nits of brightness, as opposed to 400 nits on the last-gen Zenbook Duo 14, and it covers 100% of DCI-P3, too. To top it all off, those specs are matched to the secondary display on the bottom half of the laptop, making the experience more seamless.

As per usual, that second screen can be used to expand your desktop in a variety of ways. You can also use the ASUS Control Panel to place intuitive controls on the second screen, supporting apps from Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, and others.

The laptop also has a solid supply of ports with Thunderbolt 4, USB Type-A, HDMI, and an SD card reader with support for SD Express 7.0 speeds.

ASUS Zenbook Pro 15 Flip OLED and Zenbook Pro 17

Rounding out the Zenbook Pro lineup, ASUS also announced the Zenbook Pro 15 Flip convertible and the Zenbook Pro 17 laptop. The former is a 15-inch convertible laptop powered by up to an intel Core i7-12700H processor and Intel Arc A370M graphics, plus 16GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. This model comes with a 15.6-inch OLED display with 2.8K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, plus it has a large 96Wh battery.

Meanwhile, the ASUS Zenbook Pro 17 is the first 17-inch Zenbook laptop. It has a 2.5K NanoEdge display with a 165Hz refresh rate, and it’s powered by up to an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 GPU. It also comes with up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and a 2TB SSD with super-fast 6,500MB/s read speeds. Something you might really appreciate is that it supports USB4, which is still rare on AMD laptops, but it gives you an experience similar to Thunderbolt, which is usually exclusive to Intel devices.

Zenbook S 13 OLED and Zenbook S 13 Flip OLED

Rounding out the Zenbook lineup with some more standard devices, the Zenbook S 13 OLED and Zenbook S 13 Flip OLED are two premium laptops for a more mainstream crowd. As the names suggest, one is a convertible and the other is a clamshell, and they now come with 2.8K OLED displays. The display reaches up to 550 nits of peak brightness and supports 100% of DCI-P3, too.

Inside the Zenbook S 13 Flip OLED, there are Intel’s 12th-generation P-series processors up to a Core i7-1260P with 12 cores and 16 threads. You also get up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. Meanwhile, the clamshell version is powered by up to an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U, and it maxes out at 16GB of RAM, but it’s otherwise similar. Both models also have a 67Wh battery to keep them running.

These are more so meant to be ultralight laptops, and they both measure under 15mm thin and weigh roughly 1kg (1.1kg for the Flip model), so they’re still fairly portable. ne downside of the clamshell model is that it doesn’t have Thunderbolt support due to the AMD processor, while the clamshell has a total of three Thunderbolt 4 ports. There are no other ports aside from USB-C/Thunderbolt and the headphone jack.

ASUS Vivobook Pro 14X, 15X, and 16X OLED

Moving on to the Vivobook lineup, ASUS introduced a handful of new Vivobook Pro laptops, including the Vivobook 14X, 15X, and 16X OLED. As with the rest of the laptops announced today, these all feature OLED displays with a 120Hz refresh rate, but they vary in size and resolution.

The ASUS Vivobook Pro 16X OLED is available with up to a 14-core Intel Core i9-12900H or an 8-c0re AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX, as well as up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, making it the most powerful laptop among the ones announced today. The display is also unique because it’s a 16-inch panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and it’s the first laptop in the world to feature a 3.2K OLED 120Hz panel. This one also has the largest battery of the bunch, at 90Wh, and the whole laptop uses a metal chassis. The laptop also has a digital dial called the DialPad built into the touchpad, which can be used with software including Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office apps.

The Vivobook Pro 15X OLED comes with up to an Intel Core i7-12700H or an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX, as well as an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, so it’s still a very powerful machine. The display is a slightly more conventional 15.6-inch panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio, but it’s still a 2.8K OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, and it’s the first laptop to have this kind of display at that size. Unlike the Pro 16X and Pro 14X OLED, this one doesn’t have an all-metal design, but it does have an anti-bacterial coating so it stays clean for longer. The battery is a 76Wh unit.

Finally, the Vivobook Pro 14X OLED is powered by an Intel Core i9-12900H processor as well as NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics. It’s less powerful than the bigger models, but that’s about what you should expect for its size. Beyond that, it has a 14.5-inch OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, and it comes in a 16:10 aspect ratio just like the 16-inch version. It also has an all-metal design and while the battery is even smaller (70Wh), it might actually last longer than the 15-inch model thanks to the smaller display and less power-hungry GPU.

If you don’t need all that performance, ASUS also introduced the Vivobook Pro 14 OLED and Pro 15 OLED. Both come with up to an Intel Core i7-12700H or AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX, plus up to an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti GPU. The Vivobook Pro 15 OLED has a 15.6-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and it’s a 2.8K OLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the Vivobook Pro 14 OLED has a smaller 14.5-inch display, but it has a 120Hz refresh rate and it’s still a 2.8K OLED panel. The larger model has a 70Wh battery, while the smaller one has a 63Wh unit.

Vivobook S 14X OLED and Vivobook S 16X OLED

Finally, ASUS introduced the new Vivobook S series, headlined by the new Vivobook S 14X OLED and Vivobook S 16X OLED. Both of these laptops are powered by up to an Intel Core i7-12700H or an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX processor, and they both have 16:10 OLED displays, but there’s a big difference.

The Vivobook S 14X OLED comes with a 14.5-inch 2.8K OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, similar to the laptops above. However, the 16-inch model instead uses a 4K Ultra HD OLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate, for those that value resolution over refresh rate. Otherwise, the two laptops are similar, featuring premium all-metal designs and a 70Wh battery.

If you want to step things down a notch, there’s also the new Vivobook S 14 OLED and Vivobook S 15 OLED. The Vivobook S 15 OLED has a 15.6-inch OLED panel with 2.8K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, and it comes in the more traditional 16:9 aspect ratio. Meanwhile, the Vivobook S 14 OLED has a 14-inch OLED display with 2.8K resolution, but a lower 90Hz refresh rate. It does, however, still have a tall 16:10 aspect ratio, which is very welcome. Both of these models also ditch the all-metal design for only a metal lid.

ASUS Vivobook 13 Slate OLED Steven Harrington and Philip Colbert editions

For users wanting something with a bit more personality, ASUS also announced two special editions of the Vivobook 13 Slate OLED. ASUS launched the Vivobook 13 Salte OLED last year, but these special editions feature extra elements designed with collaboration with well-known artists Steven Harrington and Philip Colbert. The package includes the tablet and a bunch of accessories, including a cover stand, a sleeve, an optional mouse, the ASUS Pen 2.0 and a pen holder, the keyboard, and stickers you can apply on the keys for a more colorful look. The Steven Harrington Edition features somewhat tropical designs with palm trees and pastel colors, while the Philip Colbert edition features the artist’s lobster character and a variety of designs.

These editions will be available this month and cost $899, which is a decent price considering you’re getting all the accessories you need and some unique designs to boot.

ASUS didn’t say when any of these new laptops will be available, but they should be rolling out in the coming months. We also don’t know when the company plans to launch the ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED that was announced earlier this year at CES. Hopefully, that’s something that comes to market soon, too.
