Facebook is looking to reintegrate Messenger back into the main app

Several years ago, Facebook announced that they would be launching its Messenger app as a standalone app. For a while, users could still choose to use Messenger within Facebook, but the company later removed it entirely, forcing users to install a separate app if they wanted to chat on Facebook with their friends on their phones.Eight years later, it looks like Facebook might have had a change of heart. According to a report from The Verge, they obtained a leaked internal memo in which the Meta executive in charge of Facebook, Tom Alison, made a note to employees that one of the changes he was looking to bring was the reintegration of Messenger back into the main app.

This means that in a future update, users will no longer need to have two separate apps for Facebook and Messenger and that it can all be done within the same app. We’re not sure if this means Facebook will kill the standalone Messenger app, but we doubt that will be the case.

This move is apparently done to help Facebook become more like TikTok which has its own in-app messenger platform. The company has been trying to emulate TikTok for the past few years, launching similar-ish features on platforms like Instagram in the form of Reels. That being said, we’re not sure when this change is expected to take place, but if you’ve never been a fan of having two separate apps, then this could be an update to look forward to.
