Motorola is bringing augmented reality to sports with its San Diego Padres partnership

Sports and technology have quite a symbiotic relationship, especially since thanks to technology, coaches and players now have more efficient ways of gleaning information about their opponents, keeping track of their plays, coming up with new strategies and sharing it on the fly, and so on.This is why it doesn’t come as a complete surprise to learn that Motorola has announced a partnership with the San Diego Padres Major League Baseball team. In this partnership, Motorola will now become the official jersey patch partner of the Padres, but in addition, they will also be the presenting partner of the Padres Hall of Fame.

By becoming a presenting partner, Motorola will be utilizing interactive technology displays and integrating their products at the exhibit. This will include augmented reality experiences that will be built using the Motorola Edge+, Lenovo ThinkReality A3 Smart Glasses, and the Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform.

By leveraging these pieces of technology, Padres fans will be able to enjoy a multiplayer augmented reality demo. This demo involves players wearing an AR headset that generates a Padres-themed gallery and placing players inside a virtual model of the Petco Park, where players can then test their pitching skills by aiming baseballs at targets placed throughout the virtual park.

According to Padres CEO Erik Greupner:
“After bringing the first-ever jersey patch partnership to Major League Baseball, the Padres and Motorola are teaming up again to pioneer an immersive AR experience for our fans to enjoy at the Padres Hall of Fame. Fans will have the opportunity to feel the thrill of being on the field at Petco Park, America’s Number 1 ballpark.”

It actually sounds pretty cool, not to mention pretty fun, so if you’re in the area, it might be worth checking out.
