5 Awesome Action Games for Android

Android gaming has come a long way from simple bird-slinging, fruit-slicing action on three-inch screens from back in the day. Thanks to more powerful processors, GPUs and ridiculously generous amounts of RAM, today’s smartphones have more power than ever before, allowing us to play some of the most immersive, interactive, and graphically-impressive titles on Android. With that said, you might be in the mood for some action-oriented titles – blazing guns, hack-and-slash, that sort of stuff. We’ve rounded up some great games that we think are worth downloading on your phone, and will certainly take a significant chunk of your gaming time. for your convenience, we’ve kept the list to feature “premium” titles, which means you’ll be able to play these offline, and you’ll only have to pay once to unlock the full game, with minimal (or non-existent) IAPs. Let’s get started!

Grand Theft Auto Series

Rockstar Studios’ Grand Theft Auto games have made a name for themselves as some of the best-selling, critically-acclaimed titles in video game history. The franchise’s boosted popularity during the PlayStation 2 era secured its spot as one of the most influential series in the industry, and the fact that we can play these games on our phones is nothing short of amazing.

With that said, there are several console-to-mobile GTA games which are available on the Google Play Store, including GTA Vice City, GTA III, GTA Chinatown Wars, and the ever-popular GTA San Andreas. The games feature lengthy story campaigns and missions which have you starting off with odd jobs, and eventually letting you power through the toughest and meanest criminal undergrounds that the GTA franchise is known for. If that doesn’t spell “action,” we don’t know what will.

Implosion – Never Lose Hope

If you’re looking for something with a bit more of sci-fi involved (think robots and space), then Implosion: Never Lose Hope is definitely a game to check out. The story puts you in the shoes of Jake, a combat pilot who controls a “Warmech” suit, designed to hack, slash, and blast alien enemies and machinery into oblivion. Originally developed for mobile platforms (and eventually ported to the Nintendo Switch), Implosion features impressive-looking graphics, fast and fluid gameplay, and boss fights which will definitely bring out the “git gud” element in you.

There’s also a customization feature involved, which means that you’ll be able to make improvements to your Warmech suit as you go through the game’s several action-filled levels.

Titan Quest

No action/adventure game list would be complete without an entry set in a fantasy-oriented world. With that in mind, Titan Quest is a terrific little game that blends action gameplay with role-playing elements, and puts you in ancient Greece, tasked with taking down several titans as they wreak havoc all across the globe. Originally developed and launched for PC and consoles, the game features an in-depth levelling system, meaning that you can upgrade your character’s skills, equipment, and ultimately make your way to the edges of the Earth as you hunt down your enemies. If you enjoy games like Diablo I and II, then you’ll feel at home with Titan Quest.

Oceanhorn

If you’re in the mood for something a bit more “casual,” then Oceanhorn offers gameplay and an in-game world similar to the older Legend of Zelda games from Nintendo. We say “similar” because it will have you exploring islands with your tiny sword, fight back enemies as you keep an eye on your heart-shaped health counter, break pots, open chests – you get the point. While its overall quality varies from the Zelda games on a more in-depth level, Oceanhorn is nevertheless an entertaining title, especially if you’re after some light-hearted exploration and combat.

Samurai II: Vengeance

Last on this list is Samurai II: Vengeance from Madfinger Games. Fans of non-stop Samurai sword-slashing-action should find a lot to love about this game. The game will have you cutting down your opponents via fluidly-executed combos, as you take on the task of bringing down an evil warlord (told through comic-book style panels) through several beautifully-designed levels. In addition to the fast-paced gameplay and east-to-learn controls, the game features a vivid environment, with a visual design inspired by classic Japanese artstyles.
