True wireless charging could be launching as soon as this year



Is the current state of wireless changing truly wireless? While you do not have to connect your phone to a cable, the fact that you need to “tether” it to the charging mat doesn’t really feel as wireless as you would assume, but the good news is that it looks like later this year, true wireless charging could finally be ready for commercialization.According to a report from TechCrunch, Israeli startup Wi-Charge told the publication that they have inked a deal with Belkin where we could see the launch of true wireless charging accessories later this year. Details are scarce at this point in time, but seeing as Belkin is no stranger to wireless charging and with Wi-Charge’s technology behind it, it’s not hard to imagine what we could be looking at.

According to Ori Mor, CEO and co-founder of Wi-Charge:

“I can’t tell you exactly what Belkin is launching, which is a bummer, because it’s a center-stage consumer product. Belkin is super interesting because of several things: It is a consumer company that is super aggressive on the timeline, and they chose a perfect application. Belkin does aftermarket accessories to charge other devices, and they do powerline products, smart home products, etc. This allows us to give them an unfair advantage for [wireless power]. I think it’s time. Everyone is waiting for wireless power.”

True wireless charging is something many of us have been eagerly anticipating for a long time now. To date we’ve seen some efforts from the likes of Motorola, but these have largely been more proof-of-concept rather than actual products you can buy, so it will be exciting to see what Wi-Charge and Belkin can bring to the table.
