We Might See the First Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus Smartphone Soon

A while back, we reported that Qualcomm has been working on a new chipset as a follow-up to its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, and that several companies already have the processor on-hand for testing with their upcoming products. Known as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus, a new report online claims that we might see the chipset in action within this year.

According to an external source referenced in a report by MS Power User, the first smartphone to feature the said chip might be released by June or early July. While no specific devices or brands were mentioned, the source predicts that the chipset and phone might be seen first in China, with a global release to follow. Supposed improvements over the current 8 Gen 1 chip were mentioned, including improved thermals and sustained performance, albeit a slightly higher price.

Another source mentioned a while back that several smartphone manufacturers including Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Motorola already have the chip for testing, and we might see them use the SoC in their next wave of smartphones. If true, we can then expect the new SoC to compete with the MediaTek Dimensity 9000, Apple’s A15 Bionic, and Google’s Tensor chipset.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets are a popular choice for a lot of smartphone brands and manufacturers, and are seen on handsets throughout different price ranges. Aside from the 8 Gen 1, Qualcomm’s 8-series chips are seen on a lot of premium-tier devices, while its 7 and 6-series chipsets are used on a lot of mid-range and budget smartphones. The company also manufactures series-4 SoCs, the likes of which often power affordable devices from brands like Motorola and Nokia.

Currently, several flagship smartphones from different brands are powered by Qualcomm’s 8 Gen 1 chipset. These include the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, the OnePlus 10 Pro, and the Xiaomi 12, to name a few.
