Eleven Kern County Sheriff's deputies and Bakersfield police officers were placed on routine administrative leave Monday after opening fire at a suspected gunman hiding in an east Bakersfield neighborhood.

The suspect was killed by their fire, and now the Sheriff's Department is leading the intense investigation with the Bakersfield Police Department.

"I heard a pow pow . and then I looked over, and [there] was a cloud of smoke," said witness Tony Dillard, "I knew they had shot somebody, and I knew he was dead."

Reports said 11 officers fired and killed one suspect hiding in an east Bakersfield neighborhood.

Two other suspects, Antonio Villa Rivera, 23, and Gerardo Chavez Valencia, 22, of Bakersfield were taken into custody.

"It's a complex investigation. We have several officers involved in the shooting," said Kern County Sheriff's Sr. Deputy Mark King, "four from the Sheriffs Office, and seven from BPD."

From the Kern County Sheriff's Department involved in the shooting were 3-year-veteran Deputy Michael Blue, 1-year-veteran Deputy Justin Weidenkopf, 1 ½-year-veteran Deputy Charles Moore, and 22-year-veteran Sgt. John Fowler.

From the Bakersfield Police Department involved were 12-year-veteran Sr. Officer Joseph Dougherty, 5-year-veteran Sr. Officer Charles Sherman, 3-year-veteran Officer Brent Stratton, 4-year-veteran Officer Patrick Mara, 4-year-veteran Officer Stephen Kauffman, 1 ½-year-veteran Officer Sean Underhill, and 2-month-veteran Officer Kevin Setser.

Officials said three events lead to the shooting. First, a 911 call reported people shooting out of a brown Honda. Then an hour later, a Sheriff's deputy witnessed gunfire from the same car. Finally, the deputies stopped the car, and the suspects ran into a neighborhood.

Reports said the suspect made his way into a backyard when officers found him, and that is when the shooting took place.

"It's stressful for officers, but we are trained to handle things in a professional manner," King said. "Each officer has to account for his own actions, and that's what our investigation is looking into."

Investigators also said the gunman refused to drop his gun.

"It's a sad thing. I feel bad for the officers that did shooting," Dillard said. "It's on their conscience."

The other two shooting suspects were taken away with the help of a police dog
