Google?s latest acquisition could boost their AR efforts

Many companies are working on augmented reality (AR) technology, even Apple who is rumored to be developing their own AR headset. Now it seems that Google is further bolstering their efforts where in a blog post by Rick Osterloh, Google’s Senior Vice President, Devices & Services, the company has acquired Raxium.

For those unfamiliar, Raxium is a company that develops single panel microLED display technologies. According to Osterloh’s post:
“The team at Raxium has spent five years creating miniaturized, cost-effective and energy efficient high-resolution displays that have laid the foundation for future display technologies. Raxium’s technical expertise in this area will play a key role as we continue to invest in our hardware efforts.”

Unsurprisingly, the post does not mention what exactly Google plans to do with their acquisition, but as it has been rumored that Google is working on their own pair of AR smart glasses, it is more likely than not that the acquisition will help Google develop their own displays rather than source from outside companies.

There has been mounting evidence of Google’s plans, where a job listing last year hinted that the company was working on their own AR operating system. It is possible that the Raxium acquisition could be used to help create displays for Google’s other products, but only time will tell.
