HTC Touch 4-way nav external button doesn't work.

I just wanted to see if anyone had the same experience or if anyone knows the problem and might be able to help.

My silver external 4-way button stops working occasionally. When it happens, all the buttons do the same thing: each of the 4 sides of the nav button do the same thing as the center "select" button.

The problem comes and goes. I already tried soft reset and hard reset, and neither one solves the problem.

If you have any insight, please help!

Edited to Add: this phone has not been modified and is exactly like it was when it came out of the box.

I should have made that clear up front - this phone has not been modified in any way. It is exactly as it came out of the box.
