Palm Makes Marked Gains in Consumer Satisfaction

J.D. Power and Associates has recently published a study examining the overall satisfaction among smartphone owners, and the results are interesting: Satisfaction among consumer smartphone owners has increased by 14 index points (on a 1,000-point scale) from just six months ago. Along with measuring consumer satisfaction with their mobile phones, they also found that among consumer smartphone owners, 22 percent want Wi-Fi capability, 21 percent want touch-screen capability, and 17 percent want GPS capability, amongst other interesting statistics.
How did Palm fare in the study?
Not well. The study went from January to June of 2009 (meaning the Pre wasn't yet in the picture) and polled 3,221 smartphone users. Palm was ranked last in Overall Smartphone Index Rankings, getting a 688 out of a 1,000 point scale, with the industry average at 724 points.

Compare this to a more recent study by CFI we covered that does take the Pre into account, occurring between August 3-10 of 2009, and polling 1,074 smartphone owners. That study finds Palm and the Pre second (tied with Android) in overall customer satisfaction, behind Apple.

What does all of this mean? It means that Palm has made marked improvements in the area of customer satisfaction in a very short time. We'll see this trend continue as Palm moves away from its legacy PalmOS and Windows Mobile based devices to webOS.
