Google Messages just Reached 1 Billion Users; New Features Coming Soon

Not too long after Apple’s highly-publicized move to finally support RCS messaging, Google recently celebrated a new milestone with Google Messages’ one billion RCS users, a rather surprising feat but one much welcome nonetheless. With that said, the company also announced new RCS chat features which will soon be available for the Google Messages app.

Based on the new features, it seems that Google has focused on bringing a more “personal” approach to how users can message others via the Messages app – one example is the inclusion of a new Photomoji feature, which lets you take a photo and use it as a reaction emoji in chats.

Users will soon be able to change the color of their message bubbles and backgrounds, a subtle but welcome improvement in terms of UI customization. Google has also worked on incorporating new Screen Effects to messages, which add a bit of animation whenever a key phrase is sent by a user – for example, typing “I love you” will trigger a heart animation onscreen.

Emoji messages and chat reactions will also get updated animations, which add for a bit of visual flair to an otherwise standard-looking chat thread.

For audio, the Messages app will soon feature support for “Voice Moods,” which adds onscreen effects to a voice message, depending on a sender’s overall mood. Google adds that voice messages will soon feature improved audio quality, made possible by an increased bitrate and sampling rate.

Last but not the least is the new “Profiles” feature, which users can access to change how they’ll appear across various Google services, extending beyond the Messages app. At the moment, the features are exclusive for beta users, so it might take a bit of time before we finally see the new features make their way to the app.
