Apple Moves to Shut Down Beeper Mini, Issues Statement

Following the early demise of Nothing and Sunbird’s Android-to-iMessage solution and Apple’s announcement of incoming RCS support next year, it almost looked like Android users had the best iMessage connectivity solution with the arrival of Beeper Mini, a paid messaging platform which brought iMessage support for Android phones.

However, not too long after its successful debut on Android, users began reporting problems with the app, such as messages not going through to recipients. This led to speculation that Apple (being Apple) possibly took steps to disable access between Beeper Mini and its iMessage platform.

With that in mind, the Cupertino tech giant recently confirmed that it was behind the shutdown of the service. As per the company’s official statement:
At Apple, we build our products and services with industry-leading privacy and security technologies designed to give users control of their data and keep personal information safe. We took steps to protect our users by blocking techniques that exploit fake credentials in order to gain access to iMessage. These techniques posed significant risks to user security and privacy, including the potential for metadata exposure and enabling unwanted messages, spam, and phishing attacks. We will continue to make updates in the future to protect our users.
Unlike Sunbird, the team behind Beeper Mini claims that they have managed to “reverse engineer” iMessage, allowing the app to connect to Apple’s services directly. This foregoes the need to sign in using your Apple ID, which is great for users concerned about privacy and security.

At the moment, Beeper Mini has issued a statement saying that it’s continuing work on fixing the outage.
