Nintendo will Shut Down Online Play Functions for the 3DS and Wii U in April

We suppose it was only a matter of time before we got this announcement – as Nintendo continues to wind down whatever remaining support is left for its 3DS and Wii U systems, the company recently announced that both platforms will no longer have access to online play functionality starting on April 8 this year.

Following an announcement made last year regarding online services, Nintendo’s official support page now reads:
“Thank you very much for supporting our products.”

“At 4pm PDT on April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end for Nintendo 3DS* and Wii U software. This also includes online co-operative play, internet rankings, and data distribution… We sincerely thank players for using the online services of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software over a long period of time and apologize for any inconvenience.”
Nintendo does state that there’s a chance that it may discontinue services at an earlier date, should there be an event “that would make it difficult to continue online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software.”

The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U were launched way back in 2011 and 2012, respectively. While the 3DS had a rough start in terms of sales, Nintendo was able to improve the handheld’s market performance in the years that followed; the same can’t be said of the Wii U, which didn’t fare as well compared to its handheld sibling.
