Samsung just announced a major update for its SmartThings home automation platform. It has integrated AI to make it effortless for users to create routines and get the most out of their smart home setup.
These are features that are Apple is yet to offer on its HomeKit platform, but Samsung's looking out for Apple users as well, with a big update for the SmartThings Apple Watch app.
Latest SmartThings update shows Apple how it's done
Samsung has now made it possible to create routines in SmartThings using natural language. Just tell SmartThings what you want the many smart home devices to do and it will take care of the rest, using AI-based natural language processing.
For example, type something like “turn off the lights when I go out,” and the AI will work its magic. There's no need to individually configure each component of the smart home or tinker with the settings. The feature is now live on both the Android and iOS apps.
A Delay Actions feature has been added to schedule several different actions at set times. For example, you can create a morning routine that turns on the lights at 7 am, opens the curtains and plays music 15 minutes later, and starts the coffee maker 30 minutes later. One single routine can now handle all of these tasks.
To prevent set routines from triggering when you don't want them to, SmartThings now has a Confirm to Run Actions feature. This will prevent accidental triggering of actions if, for example, you have a security routine that activates when you leave the home but another family member is still at home. This feature will send you a notification to confirm if you want to run the action.
Samsung has also updated the SmartThings app for the Apple Watch. It's now faster to control devices and even possible to switch between locations and control individual devices on the watch itself. A dark mode has been added as well.
Lastly, SmartThings Find has been improved with a new URL sharing feature. The location of a Galaxy SmartTag can now be shared to any device connected to the internet, even iPhones, simply by sending a URL.
