Honor’s ‘world’s thinnest foldable’ claim falls apart after Galaxy Z Fold 7 comparison

Days before Samsung announced its thinnest foldable phone ever at Unpacked 2025, Honor came out of left field with an announcement for a new Fold-like phone called the Honor Magic V5. Honor called it the thinnest foldable phone in the world, but it turns out that the company exaggerated its achievements.

X leaker @UniverseIce recently posted a side-by-side comparison with the Honor Magic V5 and Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 7. Surprisingly, the demonstration proves that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thinner than the Honor Magic V5.

Honor has its own measurements that don't make sense

Honor claims that the Magic V5 has an 8.8mm profile when folded, which makes it just 0.1mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and even the Oppo Find N5. At least, in theory. In practice, @UniverseIce's demonstration proves that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is actually thinner.

So, what gives? How can Honor claim these numbers when the Magic V5 is visibly thicker than the 8.9mm Galaxy Z Fold 7?

Well, if we inspect the official Honor Magic V5 global landing page, we can see that Honor used its own measurement system, and the company admits that the 8.8mm data comes from the HONOR Lab.

More specifically, if you scroll down far enough and find the footnotes, Honor says that the 8.8mm measurement “does not include the inner and outer screen protective films and the raised part of the camera.”

Although it is common not to include the camera's thickness when measuring a phone, excluding the protective layers of the display(s) is highly unusual. But doing so allowed Honor to claim that the Magic V5 was just marginally thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and even the Oppo Find N5.

In reality, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thinner than the Magic V5 and arguably looks better crafted in the demonstration clip above. Honor may have tricked everyone into thinking the Magic V5 was thinner, just long enough for the V5 to steal a bit of underserved spotlight from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 before Unpacked. It seems like a dirty tactic, but it may have worked for a little while. However, the facts are now coming out.

Buy the actually thin Galaxy Z Fold 7 early for bonuses
