Google Photos CapCut integration may be quietly underway. A recent APK teardown of version 7.38, conducted by Android Authority, uncovered a new button labeled “Edit in CapCut” inside the Memories viewer. This is a surprising move for Google, as it rarely promotes third-party apps, especially those tied to ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok.
The “Edit in CapCut” button appears in photo-based memories. If you don’t have CapCut installed, tapping it will prompt a Play Store download. If CapCut is already on your phone, the memory seems to be downloaded and passed to the app for editing. The integration doesn’t appear for video-only memories. Due to regional restrictions, the button couldn’t be tested fully. The teardown was conducted in India, where CapCut is currently banned.
This raises some questions. Why would Google promote a ByteDance app, especially when it’s restricted in several markets and has faced scrutiny in the US? There’s a chance ByteDance has made a deal with Google to surface CapCut in more places, but there’s no confirmation yet.
At the moment, the Google Photos CapCut integration has not been widely rolled out. It’s also missing from the beta builds. That suggests Google may still be testing it, or it could be a region-specific experiment. Either way, this is one of the most unusual in-app promotions we’ve seen from Google. Maybe it could be a sign of more partnerships to come.
