Samsung locks in exclusive OLED deal for future MacBook Pro displays

Samsung Display is reportedly going to be the sole supplier of OLED panels for upcoming MacBook Pro models. According to Korean publication Dealsite, the company has secured the exclusive deal with Apple and is investing in 8.6th-generation OLED tech specifically for the job.

This move marks a leap from the current 6th-gen OLED panels used in smaller devices. With the new generation, Samsung can produce larger displays at a lower cost. Apple is said to be requiring a hybrid approach that uses oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) technology alongside LTPS OLED. The combo could reduce power consumption, which is crucial for battery life in larger laptops.

Samsung has also made notable progress on oxide TFT yields. The report claims Samsung will be able to produce 15,000 glass substrates per month. That’s enough for up to 10 million MacBook Pro displays annually—far more than Apple is expected to need.

If the numbers are right, Apple is over-ordering by a large margin. That might fuel speculation that OLED could be coming to the MacBook Air as well. However, more recent reports suggest the MacBook Air might not get an OLED upgrade until 2029.

Interestingly, while Samsung Display focuses on MacBook panels, BOE is reportedly looking to grab iPad OLED orders. The Chinese panel maker has expanded its OLED capacity and hopes to become a key Apple supplier in the tablet space.
