Pokémon GO Raises Level Cap to 80: 7 Things You Need to Know

Pokémon GO is about to make the climb to higher levels a lot steeper, and more rewarding. Developer Niantic has announced that starting October 15, 2025, the augmented reality game will increase its maximum level from 50 to 80, marking the biggest level expansion since the game’s launch. Alongside the change, the leveling curve will be rebalanced, making progression smoother and more frequent for Trainers at every stage.

    A Reworked Leveling Experience

Leveling won’t just be about grinding XP anymore. Niantic says players can expect improved rewards across the board, including larger Pokémon, Item, and Gift storage upgrades, plus new avatar items available as early as Level 25. The long-standing Level-Up Research tasks from Levels 41–50 will be retired, replaced with new challenges stretching from Levels 71–80.

One key detail: some Trainers may find themselves automatically boosted to a higher level once the update takes effect, based on total XP earned. The good news is no one will be pushed down a level.

    More Chances at Lucky Friends

Social players will have something to cheer about too. Once the update goes live, Trainers at Level 70 and above will have a higher chance of becoming Lucky Friends with other players, making trades potentially more valuable.

XP Celebration Event Before the Update

To help everyone gear up, Niantic is running a special XP Celebration event from August 25 at 1:00 p.m. PDT through October 14 at 11:59 p.m. local time. Bonuses include:
    • Double catch XP for “Nice,” “Great,” and “Excellent” throws
    • +3,000 XP from Raid wins
    • +3,000 XP from Max Battle wins
    • Timed Research available to Trainers Level 5 and up, offering the chance to rack up more than 7 million XP before the cap increase

The event will also tweak the Level 47 Research task, reducing the requirement of walking 25 km in a week from eight times to just two.

7 Things You Need to Know

    • The Level Cap Jumps to 80: The maximum level is moving from 50 to 80, giving veteran players fresh goals and long-term progression.
    • A Smoother Leveling Curve: XP requirements are being rebalanced across the board, making levels easier to hit more consistently. Some Trainers may even auto-jump ahead on October 15 based on their existing XP totals.
    • New Level-Up Rewards: Expect bigger Pokémon, Item, and Gift storage boosts, plus fresh avatar items starting at Level 25.
    • Research Tasks Get a Shake-Up: The current Level-Up Research for Levels 41–50 will be removed. In their place, new challenges will be added for Levels 71–80.
    • Lucky Friend Odds Improve at Higher Levels: Trainers at Level 70 and above will see better chances of becoming Lucky Friends, making high-level trading more rewarding.
    • The XP Celebration Event Helps You Prep: From August 25 through October 14, bonuses include double throw XP, +3,000 XP from Raids and Max Battles, and Timed Research worth over 7 million XP.
    • Legacy Rewards Disappear After October 14: A special medal will mark your highest pre-update level, and Trainers who reached 50 keep their exclusive jacket and pose. These won’t be earnable once the update hits.

    Legacy Rewards Before October 15

Trainers will want to hit milestones before October 15 to secure legacy rewards. Everyone will receive a medal marking their highest achieved level (1–50) before the update, while Level 50 players can show off their exclusive jacket and new avatar pose. Those items won’t be unlockable after the rebalance, though anyone who already earned them will keep them.

Boost Packs in the Web Store

For those looking to fast-track their grind, Niantic is selling an XP Celebration Ultra Box via the Pokémon GO Web Store for $9.99. The bundle includes Lucky Eggs, Incubators, Incense, and Lure Modules, capped at three purchases per player.

    Preparing for the Climb

With the leveling system overhaul, Niantic is promising a more rewarding journey for both newcomers and veterans. More details will roll out closer to the October 15 update, but Trainers who want a head start should plan to stockpile XP during the ongoing Celebration event.
